“I made this drawing for The Guardian newspaper some years ago for a review of a book about the Modernist poet Hope Mirlees, who wrote a major poem ‘Paris’ in, I think, 1919. I believe it is one of my very best drawings, done in the manner of Frans Masereel, my master, who was like me both an illustrator and an anarchist. I cannot understand how I achieved some things in this drawing – the lines on the riverside or the window shutters for instance. It is also an example of a drawing that drew itself. I put in the signs because modern cities are full of signs, but when it was finished, I saw that they could show what she was thinking
– Noire, Rouge and Lux-Anarchism, Communism and Luxury, and their possible fusion.
